During their time at Yealmpton, children will be encouraged to see mathematics as both a written and spoken language. When they are first introduced to maths, the children use physical resources to help them secure their understanding of key mathematical concepts. As their understanding develops, they use pictures to reinforce and explain their thinking before developing their abstract understanding of number. Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and arithmetic fluency.
The National Curriculum provides a framework that guides the mathematical skills and learning of the children as they progress through the school.
